La Kheer Deli – Desi goes Hip!

Kheer, the quintessential rice pudding from India, is enjoyed in all parts of the country. There are several regional variations depending on which part of the country you are in but the joyous memories associated with this dessert is a common binding factor across Indians.

Keeping the traditions alive in this hipster age is La Kheer Deli, a small food startup from Pune, specializing in 4 types of Kheer. The story behind this awesome new setup is as fascinating as the Kheer they serve.

Shivika and Shivang Sood have been relishing the Kheer their mom, Sonia Sood, used to make for them since they were kids. Other desserts always took a back seat when this special Kheer was prepared in their home. They had their Eureka moment when one day, they mixed Nutella with this Kheer and it turned out to be delicious. They continued experimenting with different flavours and a few months down the line, La Kheer Deli was born!

Setup is simple but unique in it’s own way – a small cart with quirky images, designs and messages lights up around 8 pm every Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings at Aundh (right outside Starbucks). Yes, it’s restricted to 3 days a week only – probably so you crave for it all week and line up sharp at 8 pm every Friday 🙂

Kheer is available in 4 flavours –

Dry Fruit (₹79) – the basic home made Kheer with loads of dry fruits on top

Nutelloreo (₹99) – Kheer mixed with Nutella and Oreo. This one is totally off the hook and my favourite!

Gulkand (₹99) – the basic Kheer with fresh rose petal preserve. If you like Gulkand kulfi, you will definitely love this one

Brownie (₹99) – Kheer mixed with egg less brownie. Brownies are not my thing so not something I’ll have again

All Kheers are served in a well packed 150 gm cups with animal caricatures at the bottom for those selfie addicts. Each Kheer also comes with a small packet of marigold seeds to plant in the Kheer cup instead of discarding them. Last time I checked, they’ve already distributed over 10,000 of these seeds!

Payment is quite easy as they accept cards, cash and all other digital payment methods. To avoid disappointment, you can even book your Kheer in advance and just pick it up (deliveries to nearby areas were supposed to start soon!).

La Kheer Deli has their heart in the right place and it shows. You’re always served with a wide smile which makes the Kheer even sweeter!
